Our Travel Bucket List

We make it a point to go on at least one big trip per year. Sometimes those are road trips in the Midwest close to home, and sometimes those are bucket list trips overseas. We feel that it re-charges us taking time away from work and getting to experience new places. It also gives us a new sense of why we are working so hard the rest of the year, to be able to have experience like this. There are a lot of places in this world I would like to see, but I have come to grips with the fact that I probably won’t be able to see them all in my lifetime. I do hope to see several more of the places I put on the top of my list and of course some that aren’t on the list.

We like to keep a short list so, if we are able to plan a BIG trip, we know exactly where we want to start planning. It is good to have goals and our goals come in the form of places we want to visit. If you have recommendations of locations or things to do in any of these areas, we would love to hear them. Because who better to get advice from than folks who have been before!

Locales in the US

1.) The Pacific Northwest – We haven’t ever been to the PNW, and don’t count the Seattle airport as visiting, but we have heard and seen some great things about the entire area. We have heard from reliable sources (a lot of friends) that it’s an outdoor lovers' paradise, so naturally we put it at the top of our list. It moved up to Number #1 after our Colorado/Utah trip a few summers ago.

2.) The Great Smoky Mountains – The East Coast doesn’t get as much love as it should. We have driven through this area many times, but never had enough time to stop in the Smokies to really experience what it has to offer. We figure we will need at least 4-5 days in this beautiful location so it will have to wait for an extended weekend trip. Luckily we are within driving distance so we can make a long weekend out of it. We have visited some unique locations in this area and know it has a lot to offer and look forward to diving into Black Bear Country.

3.) The Atlantic Northeast – Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire…tucked away in a corner of the U.S many don’t ever get to see or even fly through, the Northeast United States seems to have a lot to offer. Besides, of course, Acadia National Park, which we will need to visit to complete our 59 National Parks list, the area is also known for some great skiing during the winter and hiking during the summer and we think fall would even be a great time to visit to see the trees changing color. It would be a great spot anytime of the year which give us some flexibility.

International Destinations

1.) New Zealand – It is one of only a couple of places that has always been on our bucket list, along with Iceland (crossed off this summer!) and I am not really sure why. I mean I have seen the pictures of the beautiful landscapes and mountain peaks…oh, wait, now I know why it’s on my bucket list.

2.) Antarctica - Remote locations have always intrigued us. I think that is why we love Alaska so much. The feeling I get when I know I am only one of a handful of people on the planet to ever step foot on a piece of earth excites me. This may be the only way I will ever be the 1% of something and I am OK with that. This one might require us to win the lottery to visit though because it is not cheap!

3.) Cordillera Huayhuash – There have been a few places on earth that I have seen a picture of and said to myself, “I have to step foot in that spot and experience everything that view has to offer.” I have visited several of these places and crossed them off my list, but this one has always felt a little different. One of those places that is always in the back of your mind whispering that you should visit.

Our list is a whole lot longer than this but didn’t want to bore everyone with a crazy 118 pages of places. It may take a while to complete, but we're up for the challenge!

We would love to hear what places you have on your travel bucket list or recommendations to put on ours.
