Fun For All
The Westside is home to the most beautiful medley of people, full of culture and diversity, united by their differences to form a strong and caring community. This strength and commitment is what makes the Westside uniquely capable to overcome the barriers that impact our neighborhoods.
The Richmond Park Project, spearheaded by Mitten Foundation, the charitable arm of The Mitten Brewing Company, is a community wide effort to bring a universally accessible play area to Grand Rapids’ Westside. A park that is welcoming to children and families, regardless of class or ability. A park where all children, regardless of barriers that effect mobility such as wheelchairs or walking aids, can safely play and enjoy the outdoors.
It is a dream that can become a reality simply by switching current plans for wood chips in favor of a poured-in-place rubber surface in the play area. Though ADA approved wood chips are covered under the city millage, a poured-in-place surface is ideal for those impaired by mobility issues.
So how do you join in the fun?
Decide what your personal challenge will be (follow Happy People Hike and Mitten Foundation on social media for ideas), let your friends and family know and collect donations from them in support! Kind of like how you used to collect cash from the neighbors as a kid for your school fundraiser - do that. Collect the funds however works best for you, then make a one time donation for the project HERE.
